ABOUT ROBERT SULLIVAN
Robert Sullivan is an award winning band director and music educator with 15 years experience teach at both the middle school and high school levels. Music education is his passion.
Robert is a native Texan having been born and raised in Ft. Worth where he attended Western Hills High School and was under the direction of Patsy Dickerson. While at Western Hills, Mr. Sullivan studied trombone with Jim Jackson. Patsy Dickerson is Mr. Sullivan’s life-long mentor, “stand-in mom” and musical inspiration.
Mr. Sullivan earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the Hankammer School of Business at Baylor University with concentrations in Marketing, Finance and Economics in 1983. After graduating from Baylor, Mr. Sullivan worked in commercial real estate in the Dallas- Ft. Worth area for 8 years. After a bout with cancer, he realized his true purpose and went on to earn a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1995.
Sullivan began his teaching career in the Coppell ISD in the DFW area and has also had assignments in the Northwest ISD, Carrolton-Farmers Branch ISD and Fort Bend ISD and Austin ISD.
His bands at both the middle school and high school level have earned numerous and consistent UIL Sweepstakes Awards. His students have also won various Outstanding Band awards and Best in Class titles throughout the State of Texas and Florida.
In 2000, his band from Medlin Middle School in Trophy Club, Texas earned the Texas State Championship Class C Honor Band Award. This is the highest honor a Texas band can receive. Mr. Sullivan has been awarded the Texas Music Educators Association “Leadership and Achievement Award”, the Texas Music Educators Association “Honor Director Award” and the National Band Association’s “Citation of Excellence” for his contributions to music education.
Before his assignment at Grand Prairie, he taught in the Austin ISD at Crockett High School. The Crockett band earned consistent 1st Division ratings, as well consistent UIL Sweepstakes Awards. In addition to the Sweepstakes title, the marching band competed at the Bands of America Super-Regional in San Antonio in 2010, 2011 and 2012 placing 4th and 5th in their division.
Under his direction, the Crockett Marching Band also won the USBands State Championships in 2011, 2012 and 2013. Under the direction of Mr. Sullivan, Crockett advanced the UIL Area D Marching Contest every 4A year. Additionally, Mr. Sullivan was the lead grant writer that brought the $250,000 “Any Given Child Learning Initiative” grant to the Crockett vertical fine arts cluster.
His professional associations include; Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Band Master’s Association, Texas State Teacher’s Association, Music Educator’s National Conference, National Band Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music Fraternity and Delta Kappa Pi Honor Society in Education, and Education Austin. Mr. Sullivan is an active adjudicator and clinician in the Austin and Dallas-Ft.Worth metro areas.
Mr. Sullivan hopes his students will always dream big dreams, believe in themselves and to know that hard work brings great rewards.
